The Dajaal is the false messiah that would seek to impersonate the true Messiah ie Isa (SAW) (Jesus.). He will be released at the end of time as a major sign of the day of Judgement. Dajjal has its roots in the word “Dajil” which means to “lie” or “deception”. Dajjal would deceive the majority of the people at the end of time, except the God fearing people who are rightly guided, follow the true religion of Ibrahim and follow the last messenger Muhammad (SAW).
The messenger of Allah (SAW) and indeed all prophets that were sent by God warned the people of the great trials that would be brought upon by Dajjal. Indeed, the prophet warned that his trials would be so great, that a Muslim would have to flee his presence to save his faith.
There have been several hadiths on Dajjal as mentioned by the Prophet and may be found below:
Anas RA said, “The Prophet said, ‘The Dajjal will come to Madinah, and he will find angles guarding it. Neither plague nor the Dajjal will enter it, InshAllah.’ (Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Bukhari). When he camps at the salt-marsh (Sabkhah) a place in Madinah, it will be shaken by three tremors – either physically or metaphorically, which will cause all the hypocrites to join Dajjal. On that day, Madinah will be cleansed of unholy people and will be refined and purified, Allah (SWT) knows best.
Renowned hadith scholar Hafiz Al Dhahabi said ‘seeking refuge with Allah (SWT) from Dajjal is mentioned in many hadith. Abu Darda reported Allah’s Apostle (SAW) as saying: “If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah Al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal.” [Muslim]
Dajjal will be killed by Prophet Isa (SAW). Prophet Isa, will not grace this world as a Prophet rather his manifestation will be that of a follower of the shariah (law) of Prophet Muhammed (SAW). Abdullah ibn ‘Amr said, “The Prophet said, The Dajjal will appear in my Ummah, and will remain for forty, I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years.” – Then Allah (SWT) will send Isa (Jesus) (SAW), the son of Mary, who will resemble ‘Urwah ibn Mas’ud (one of the companions of Muhammed (SAW)). He will chase the Dajjal and kill him”. Majma Ibn Jariyah is reported to have said, “I heard the Prophet saying, ‘The son of Mary will kill the Dajjal at the gate of Ludd’ (At-Tirmidhi).
The Prophet PBUH constantly sought refuge in ALLAH SWT from the trial of Dajjal. The beloved Prophet (SAW) used to supplicate this dua in his final tashahhud: (Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika min l’athaabil-qabri, wa min ‘athaabi jahannama, wa min fitnatil-mahyaa walmamaati, wa min sharri fitnatil-maseehid-dajjaal) “Oh ALLAH, I seek refuge in you from the torment of the grave, from the punishment of Hell-fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evils of the trial of Dajjal” [Bukhari & Muslim].
